• Purpose:

Students will be able to perform long division with a quotient of zero through video guidance and technical practice.

• Warming Up (20 minutes)

Activate students’ prior knowledge on division with a quotient of zero through the activity below.

Write the problem on the platform.

Students will be asked to grab any 32 items from their house such as peas, Lego, cards, candies, etc. Then, they will distribute the items among 3 family members. Finally, they will reflect on the questions below and will take a picture of their work to be shared via the platform.

1.     How many items did each friend receive?

2.     How much is left?

3.     How can you find this result using the division operation?

• Learning Activity 1 (20 minutes)

Send Video 1 for students to watch asynchronously. Before students watch the video, have them reflect on what they might know about estimation of zero through filling in the first part of the visible thinking routine “What I Know” (Worksheet 1). Have them share their prior knowledge of estimation with a quotient of zero on a Jamboard with their friends.

To check for understanding, after watching the video, have students independently reflect on the new knowledge they acquired about estimation with a quotient of zero fill in the second part of the visible thinking routine “What I Learned”.

Then, have them share their work on the visible thinking routine on the designated platform.

• Learning Activity 2 (15 minutes)

Before students go further with the concept of division with a zero in the quotient, have them sort out the steps of division with a zero in the quotient. Share the steps below with the students via the platform:

Step 1: Divide the divisor into the first number in the dividend. Think, how many twos will fit into eight? Then, write the number above the number you divided into.

Step 2: Multiply the divisor and the first number in the quotient. Then, write the answer under the first number of the dividend.

Step 3: Subtract the first number in the dividend and the answer you got from multiplying the first number in the quotient with the divisor.

Step 4: Go to the next number in the dividend and bring it down next to the answer you got in step 3.

Step 5: Here you decide if you have to repeat the step of long division. If the divisor can divide into the number zero or if you still have numbers in the dividend that haven’t been brought down, you repeat the steps of long division.

To check for understanding, send Worksheet 2. Once students are done, share Answer Key 1 so students can self-check their answers.

• Assessment (30 minutes)

Have students take the test (Test 1). Set an allocated time for students to send back results through the platform (privately) or by email, or you can recreate the assessment on google forms or Kahoot

• Wrap-Up (15 minutes)

Each student will receive a list of the cards (Reference 1) in order to choose one card to create a division word problem.

Once students are done with composing the division word problems, have them post the word problems on Jamboard/Padlet so their friends can select one of these problems to solve, modelling the long division steps.
